Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why does the Hippo Hug™ help you sleep better? Is it because it’s heavy?

The deep pressure stimulates your body to produce ‘good’ hormones like serotonin and oxytocin and combat the ‘bad’ hormones like cortisol.

Q: For seniors, does a 3 lb blanket do the same job as a 35 lb blanket?

For seniors over age 75, we often find that 10-12 lbs at most are best even if they could have more based on their body weight.

In part, this is due to a general lack of strength in this age group. Thus, moving a heavier blanket independently can be a challenge.

Being able to independently use a weighted blanket is integral to the person's ability to benefit from use. In general, if the senior needs to ask for help each time they want to use their Hippo Hug™ weighted blanked, they will usually lose their desire to use it.

Q: When do people start noticing results?

Often people say they see results after their first use, but most commonly it takes a few days/nights to really decide that it is the blanket that is making the difference.

Q: Why would our facility buy a Hippo Hug™ Multi-Patient Weighted Medical Blanket? What are the benefits?

We say that like a hug, a weighted blanket helps you feel calm and safe.

But often hugs aren’t always available. So, our blankets help calm your sensory system, allowing your body to settle into sleep, putting a stop to that brain-body response where feelings of anxiety can cause physical symptoms.

Q: Can you wash Hippo Hug™ Multi-Patient Weighted Medical Blankets?

Yes, our blankets are fully cleanable. Our medical-grade, multi-patient blankets are fully waterproof and can be wiped clean with single-use disinfectant wipes. We have removable covers available for purchase for all our blankets for patient comfort and ease of laundering to cut down on the frequency with which the blanket may need to be machine washed.

Q: Is there a cover that goes on and off?

We do offer both pre-made covers and covers to fit your blanket for an added charge. Covers are available in waterproof and standard varieties depending on your facility's needs.

Our medical-grade, multi-patient blankets are fully waterproof and can be wiped clean with single-use disinfectant wipes. Our removable covers are available for purchase for all our blankets for patient comfort and ease of laundering to cut down on the frequency with which the blanket may need to be machine washed.

Q: How do our patients use them: on top of the covers? under the covers but over the top sheet? or, directly on the body?

Usually people do top sheet, then weighted blanket, and then the bed blankets.

The second favourite option is to put the weighted blanket on top of everything.

Alternatively your patients can wear them over their shoulders or on their lap.

Q: How do you know what weight to buy? Do you have a chart?

Please see chart below to choose appropriate weight. The general rule is 5-15% of body weight.

Q: How long can my facility try them?

Your facility can try them initially for up to 4 weeks. After that, we will work with facilities on a case-by-case basis if they require more time to test the products with their patients.

To make sure things are clear, we keep in touch on a regular basis with people trying our multi-patient weighted blankets and lap pads.

Q: How many Hippo Hug™ Multi-Patient Weighted Medical Blankets will you give for a trial?

We have two boxes of pre-set items available for trial. There are four weighted blankets and four weighted lap pads in a variety of sizes to meet the needs of most patient body types and ages.

If you are looking to try something different than what is offered in the trial boxes, we will do our best to accommodate your request.

Q: How long do your Hippo Hug™ Multi-Patient Weighted Medical Blankets last? What is the life expectancy?

We have customers who purchased blankets in the company’s infancy (circa 2012). Hippo Hug™ Multi-Patient Weighted Medical Blankets are specifically built for multi-use and long term usage.

Q: My institution has unique needs. How do I know Hippo Hug™ Multi-Patient Weighted Medical Blankets are the right choice?

We manufacture Hippo Hug™ Multi-Patient Weighted Medical Blankets ourselves in Canada and so are in complete control of the process in order to make changes to suit your facility's particular needs.

Hippo Hug™ is not just a retailer of weighted blankets. We are also the manufacturer. This means that production changes can be discussed and implemented in order to meet your facility's exclusive needs.

Q: What types of washable covers do you have?

We have two types of washable covers.

The first type is meant to go over a waterproof blanket to give a more homey feel. The cover is a single layer in one of three options: two-sided cotton, cotton one side and cuddle the other (cuddle is a fabric which is 100% polyester and soft like fleece), or two-sided cuddle.

The second type is a two-layer, waterproof cover that has a layer of waterproof fabric and a layer of either cotton, cotton/cuddle or cuddle. This is meant to go over a liquid-resistant or regular blanket to provide a layer of protection and cut down on the amount of washing needed. It is mostly used in cases of incontinence in home-like environments where there is a desire for a blanket with less of a clinical feeling.

Our covers are made with ties to connect to loops on the Hippo Hug™ blanket so that the blanket does not slide within the cover. They can be custom sized to fit any of our blankets.

In addition, the Hippo Hug™ wipeable blanket could easily be used between two sheets or blankets to remove the need for a separate cover.
